The municipal election might not be until Oct. 25, but some candidates have already stepped forward.

Bradford West Gwillimbury Mayor Doug White, Deputy Mayor Dennis Roughley and Simcoe County District School Board Trustee Nancy Halbert all filed to run for the same positions.

"I'm really pleased with the progress we've made in the last four years, but there's a ways to go," Mr. White said, noting job creation, recreation projects and improvements to the downtown core as some of the most important issues he expects will face the town in the next term.

"I welcome the opportunity to pursue those issues further," he said.

If re-elected, he plans to hire more staff in all departments to match growth, he said.

Mr. White said he also hopes to prevent Simcoe County issues from being lost in municipal politics as he sits on the county's governance committee.

A past county warden and a town council member since 1985, Mr. Roughley expressed similar concerns regarding growth but said he hopes to focus more on social services if re-elected.

Currently chairman of the Simcoe Muskoka District Board of Health, among other roles, Mr. Roughley wants to see more children's services, community works and social housing, along with a family health clinic for residents of Bradford West Gwillimbury.

"The key is the social and health services we don't have in our community, because as we grow, services need to grow with us. That's a huge challenge," he said.

Since the nomination period officially began Jan. 1, no other candidates have filed nomination papers.

Anyone else interested in running for mayor, deputy mayor, councillor or school board trustee has until Sept. 10 to fill out a nomination form and submit it to the clerk's department in person, along with the $200 fee for mayor or $100 fee for all other offices.
